The mesmerising silhouettes are set against the backdrop of The Next Era, a gallery of paintings signed Mariella Bettineschi and composed of large female portraits borrowed from the history of painting from the 16th to the 19th century. Their eyes, cut and duplicated, question the judgment that has conditioned – and still conditions – women…From clothing to accessories, the creations combine aesthetics and technology, revisiting the Dior heritage. Taking place on the opening night of Paris Fashion Week, Off-White (with a little help from Naomi Campbell, Serena Williams, Cindy Crawford and more) paid tribute to its late and great founder, Virgil Abloh, who sadly passed away last year. The new decade is well and truly here and while 2022 has shown us a new world we are still adjusting to, 2022 wedding hair feels a little different to previous years. Why? Well, nothing is off-limits with much smaller weddings, elopements and impromptu ceremonies. It’s an interesting time where anything goes and while there may be less of a focus on trends this year, there are defining looks that we are likely to continue to see.
At Balenciaga, number four on our list, Demna originally hoped to address the intensifying anxieties of global warming. But the escalating crisis in Ukraine utterly changed his meaning. Balenciaga’s climate refugees with their leather garbage bags suddenly looked like war refugees. Having fled Georgia as a young boy when Russia invaded that country in 1993, Demna considered canceling the show, but ultimately decided to carry on. “Personally, I have sacrificed too much to war,” he said. “We must resist.” His cinematic presentation, set in a snow globe with models’ long dresses and long hair shuddering in the wind, produced the season’s most stirring visuals, and the catharsis that many of his followers were longing for.
I am so excited about spring/summer 2022’s fashion trends. The overarching mood was one of real optimism, but where the previous season perhaps went into overdrive with the desire (desperation?) to get dressed up for even the most low-key of weekly grocery shops, the outlook for spring and summer is that there is a time and place to be extra fabulous but still a strong demand and a necessity for easy, simple, luxurious, gorgeous clothes and outfits you can fling on in a hurry.
One of the most wearable trends to come out of this round of runways was the pleated skirt, and while there was a light scattering of mini incarnations reminiscent of this summer’s favourite tennis skirt, for SS22 it’s all about the pleated midi. Other than that, there really are no rules. Printed, plain, colourful, monochrome, paired with knits or paired with a bralette – as long as it’s pleated then you’re bang on the money. Pleated skirts may be midi for next season, but all others are raising the hemlines to minuscule lengths. These are minis that the supermodels of the ’90s would’ve been proud to wear, with well over half of the thigh exposed beneath the brief slip of fabric. Opt for super-statement shades, prints or fabrics to ensure that while the skirt may be small it still packs a real punch. French Chic, Stylist and creative director Maria Bernad is the definition of French chic outside New York Fashion Week. Ho is loving all the short cuts, seen at fashion week and on Instagram. “People are going shorter, sassier, and stronger,” she says. “I’ve been cutting shorter and shorter bobs lately, and I am obsessed.” Actress and model Taylor Lashae takes French chic to the next level with a black beret. We’re also loving the wavy texture of her hair, which adds a certain softness to the cut.
The schedule began in September in New York City, where there was quite the buzz around the shows as fashion’s finest flew into town for the Met Gala, which was postponed to Monday 13 September. The fashion set then headed to London, Milan and Paris, where there was be plenty of excitement with the return of the front row, debut designer collections and a beautiful tribute to the late Alber Elbaz in Paris, where 40 designers have paid homage to his work with a collection dedicated to the couturier.
